Tax Return 2012/2013 Deadline Extension

HMRC have extended the 31st January Self Assessment deadline until the 15th February 2014. However the deadline is not for everyone who completes a Self Assessment tax return.

The deadline is being allowed because of the delay in receiving the necessary user ID, activation code and password. The details are sent via post and the process normally takes between seven to ten days. A tax return can’t be submitted without your login password and ID and HMRC recognises that it is a reasonable excuse not to have your return submitted on time, if you have to wait for the information to arrive in the post.

Does the tax return deadline apply to me?

The deadline doesn’t apply to most people in the self assessment system.

The deadline helps those tax payers who did the following between midnight on 21 January and midnight on 31 January 2014:

  • registered for the Self Assessment online service
  • notified HMRC of a lost ID or password and requested a replacement

Who doesn’t the tax return deadline apply to?

Pretty much everyone else, including tax payers who haven’t registered for Self Assessment on time. The deadline is for people who have already registered for Self Assessment and have been given a UTR ( unique taxpayer reference ). If you should have registered for Self Assessment and haven’t the deadline will not be applicable.

What if I still get a late filing penalty notice

It’s likely that you will still get a late filing penalty through the post. If this happens and the extension is relevant to you, you should make an appeal against the penalty in writing, as soon as possible.

Child Benefit Tax Return

The deadline could help many of the parents who are late in submitting their tax returns because of the new child benefit rules. Tens of thousands of parents didn’t submit a tax return by the deadline and this could help avoid any penalties.

Tax Rebate Services is offering a Child Benefit Tax Return Service. We use qualified accountants who can help you file and appeal any penalties.
