An initial UCU tax rebate submission can be backdated for the last four income tax years only.

Future income tax savings for UCU members

When your claim has completed and you have received your tax rebate for the last four tax years your tax code will usually be increased, as the allowance will be put into your code for your UCU fees. This decreases your tax payments for the rest of your professional career.

Can I claim for anything else?

When making a UCU tax rebate claim many education professionals can also claim a tax rebate for other professional fees and for purchasing and laundering any specialist clothing. In addition, tax relief can be claimed for using your own car for business travel and if you are contractually obliged to work from home.

How to claim your UCU tax relief

As a member of the UCU you should make your claim submission either online or by post to the tax office (aka HMRC). The tax office will normally take up to 12 weeks to reply in writing to give you a response confirming if you are entitled to a tax refund.
