Rural Fuel Cost Reduction

Government honors plans to extend rural fuel cost reductions.

Those drivers living in isolated island locations have been receiving cheaper petrol and diesel since March 2012. They are charged 5p per litre less and service stations reclaim the shortfall from the government. At the start of 2015, the coalition government laid out plans to offer this to 17 of the most cut off areas on the British mainland from this month.

If you are one of the 125,000 residents lucky enough to enjoy the seclusion and beauty of these areas, you now can also benefit from reduced fuel costs! Sections of Bute, the Highlands and Argyll, Cumbria, Northumberland, North Yorkshire and Devon have been identified as recipients of this good news.

Although there is a note of warning from Edmund King, the AA president, who said, “We are still concerned that new pump price increases may spark accusations of the rebate not being passed on in its entirety, as happened on Shetland in 2012”.

With fuel in mind it’s a good idea to check to see if you are entitled to claim business mileage tax relief. You can claim a mileage allowance from the tax office if you use your own vehicle to travel to temporary workplaces with your job.
