Nurses Tax Rebates for Shoes and Tights

If you are a Nurse claiming tax relief on the cost of your shoes and tights is one of the reliefs available to you.

The tax office has an agreement in place  for Nurses called EIM67200.

Who is eligible to claim a Nurse rebate?

All genders and grades of nurses and midwives. This includes; healthcare workers or assistants, dental nurses, student nurses, auxiliaries and nursing assistants.

How much can Nurses claim for?

This is an agreed rate that applies to all the taxpayers mentioned above and does not require any receipt evidence.

  • £6 per year for tights,  socks and stockings
  • £12 per year for shoes

For male nurses you can claim for socks instead of stockings or tights.

Are there any conditions attached to these amounts?

Yes! These amounts only apply when it is part of your workplace’s dress code for you to wear a particular colour and style of shoe or hosiery.

Can I claim a tax rebate for any other work expenses as a Nurse?

In a word – yes! Here are some of the most common claims made by nurses and midwives;

  • Laundering your work uniforms and protective clothing.
  • Using your own car to make journeys between different work locations.
  • Buying equipment or uniform exclusively for use at work.
  • Fees for Trade Union membership and subscriptions to other professional bodies.
  • If a work trip requires you to stay away from home, you are eligible to claim for subsistence and hotel costs.
  • Working from home, in some cases.
