Institute of Direct Marketing Tax Relief

Did you know that you are entitled to claim back the tax on your IDM subscription fees?

Maybe you read the regulations and decided it wasn’t worth the time and hassle.

But are you aware of all of the other legitimate tax reliefs you could also be claiming back?

As you know, you are a member of the only institute for the professional development of direct and digital marketers that is endorsed by the government.

IDM tax relief

The IDM has formed an agreement with HMRC so that its members can reclaim the tax they have paid on their membership fee, whether you are an associate, affiliate or full member.

IDM member tax rebates

IDM members can claim tax relief on their membership fees but there are many other work expenses tax reliefs available to members of the IDM including:

  • Working from home.
  • Buying equipment for work purposes.
  • Payments to other professional bodies or a Union.
  • Travelling to different locations for work.

These are just some of the many items we have successfully claimed for members of the IDM.

How do I get my IDM membership fee tax relief?

The answer to this and any other question regarding the Tax Office has a multitude of variables. Here are your 4 options;

  1. Write the gross amount paid in section 1.34-1.36 of your Tax Return. This answer is only applicable if you cover this cost yourself and complete a self assessment tax return.
  2. Complete a form P87 online and submit it online or by post to HMRC. This option is only if you don’t fill out a tax return.
  3. Make sure it is included in your P11d form section 1.32-1.36 and section 1.22-1.23. This is only relevant if your employer pays for your membership fee and it is recorded as a business ‘benefit and expense’ by your employer.
