More about Travel Tax

Travel Tax is applicable to anyone who travels frequently for their work. This could be to meetings and other sites, or could be travelling to a temporary workplace that is away from your normal base.

It doesn’t matter whether you use public transport, or your own vehicle.  You can still claim back money that relates to this travel, and put it straight back in your pocket.

Is it only travel I can claim for?

Whilst costs that are associated to the travel itself is the most common factor when claiming for Travel Tax Refunds, there are a number of other things that you can claim for too. This includes the food or accommodation costs that are associated to you travelling.

This normally falls under the subsistence category of a claim.

Is there anything I should know about making a claim?

When it comes to making a claim for Travel Tax, it is important that you only claim for temporary workplaces, that is places that you will be based at for under 2 years.  You cannot make any claims for your regular commute.

For expenses there are a number of things that you can claim for as part of your tax relief. This includes:

  • Hotel accommodation if you have had to stay overnight
  • Congestion charges and tolls
  • Public transport costs
  • Food and drink
  • Parking fees
  • Business calls

You may also find that you can make a claim on the mileage that you completed during your travelling.

Your own vehicle will be eligible for mileage allowance and for company cars you can claim back for any fuel or electricity costs that you have had to pay out associated to travelling.
