What Tax Relief Am I Owed if Moving Abroad?

Despite many of us feeling happy and content with living in the UK, there are others who love the idea of moving to a different country, taking their family and life with them.

This could be due to family circumstances, work opportunities, or simply to experience everyday life in a different country.

There is plenty to think about if you are planning to move abroad, so a Tax Relief may not be at the forefront of your mind.

Claiming tax back when you live abroad

If you moved abroad up to 4 years ago, then you may be surprised to learn that the UK tax office may very well owe you some money, however this tax can only be refunded if you make the moves to apply. It is not automatic, and the tax office will not contact you to begin proceedings.

For many of us, the idea of claiming tax is that it is a long and arduous process, even for those that live within the UK. This can be even trickier if you move abroad. Factors such as time zones, costly phone call charges and just the everyday tasks that come when you live abroad, all of these can have an impact on your ability to make a claim.

Who is entitled to claim?

There are a variety of reasons that could mean that you are eligible for a Tax Rebate after moving abroad. The important thing is that you have stopped working and living within the UK in the past 4 years.

You may also have income from a UK pension or rental property (making you a non resident landlord) which means that you still pay UK Income Tax, despite not living in the country. You could also be paying UK Income Tax, despite the fact that you are employed in another country.

The factors that affect how much you are owed

It is possible to calculate how much UK tax you can claim back after moving abroad, and this will depend on a variety of different factors.

This includes:

  • Your income and tax paid whilst working within the UK. This could be for PAYE and self-employment
  • If you receive any company benefits of claimed for work related expenses
  • The number of years that you worked in the UK and paid tax

You may be surprised by just how much tax you will receive back, simply because you have relocated to another country.
