Most construction workers whether under PAYE or CIS can reclaim tax relief on the expenses they incur because of their job.
What else can members of the construction heads claim for?
- Subscriptions to The British Association of Construction Heads, other professional bodies, some Trade Unions and trade journals.
- Using your private vehicle for travel to temporary work locations. (This does not include your ‘home to usual workplace’ journey.)
- Food and refreshment costs if you go to temporary sites
- Buying and/or washing protective clothing and work uniforms.
- Tools you buy specifically for work.
- If you work at a site away from home you can claim on subsistence and accommodation costs.
BACH members tax rebate tips
- If your employer has already reimbursed you for these costs then you can’t claim tax relief for them.
- The rules have variable requirements, for example, the amount of receipt evidence you might need. This makes the process very frustrating as there is no clear, ‘one size fits all’ procedure.
- A claim can be backdated up to 4 years and you don’t have to have been with the same employer for the entire time.
- All communication about your tax affairs is between you and Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs and not your employer.

The Tax Office want to give you this money back – it’s already yours! But they can’t unless you make an official claim.
How do construction head members claim a tax rebate?
To make a tax rebate claim for your fees into the BACH and other work related expenses you will normally need to complete a P87 form or a self assessment tax return (sometimes both).
