Health and Care Professions Council Tax Rebate

The health and care professions council regulates a number of professions, ranging from biomedical scientists to speech therapists.

Each profession under its regulation has a legal obligation to be a member of the HCPC, and has to pay an annual subscription fee.

The HCPC has agreed with the tax office that the HCPC fee is tax deductible, meaning you can claim back tax relief on your subscription costs. Making a claim can mean you get a tax rebate for previous years, and get a new tax code resulting in you paying less tax moving forward.

How far back can I claim an HCPC tax rebate?

You can claim a tax rebate on your HCPC fees for the last four tax years.

How much is an HCPC tax rebate worth?

The amount you can claim back depends on how much you earn. If you are a basic rate tax payer you will get 20% tax relief on the total subscription fee. The percentage of tax relief you can claim increases if you pay tax at the higher rate(s).

For example if you pay tax at the basic rate ( 20% ) a £76 annual fee will reduce to £60.80. That’s a saving of £15.20 per tax year.

What else can I claim a tax rebate for?

It’s common for HCPC members to be able to claim back tax relief on other types of work related costs. These include:

  • Business mileage – if you travel to different places of work
  • Other professional bodies and some Unions
  • Cleaning of uniform or protective clothing
  • Working from home – if you are contractually obliged to carry out duties from your home

You can claim back these additional costs at the same time as claiming back your HCPC tax rebate.
