Q. What is a tax code?
A. A tax code is issued to each tax payer by HMRC.
If you work under PAYE your tax code is used by your employer or pension provider to calculate the amount of income tax to be deducted and the amount of tax free earnings permitted in that tax year.
A tax code is a series of numbers and letters for example 810L. The number 810 relates to the amount of income which can be earned tax free per year.
