Common Questions About Tax
Q. Can I claim tax back on travel expenses?
A. If you use your own car, van or motorbike to travel to different temporary locations as part of your job you may be able to make a business mileage tax rebate claim.
In addition if you carry a passenger in your own car for work purposes it is possible to reclaim a further passenger allowance. If you travel to different temporary workplaces using public transport you can generally make a tax rebate claim for this. For a workplace to be classed as temporary you must generally be, or expect to be, at each workplace for less than 2 years.
HMRC currently allows a mileage allowance for the 2012/2013 tax year of 45p per mile up to 10000 miles and 25p per mile thereafter. If your employer reimburses you by way of a mileage allowance or other allowance in your pay, or your mileage allowance is taxed, you may still be able to make a claim.
In order for a claim to be successful HMRC will require records to be kept of locations visited with dates and details of how much you have been reimbursed by your employer each week or month.
